The pandemic has shown us how close we can be to having nothing. Many people are much closer to losing everything than they would like. Monarch Village, created by Studio , offers a housing solution to meet the needs of homeless individuals and families.
Everyone deserves a clean and safe place to live. And when someone is transitioning between permanent living situations, temporary housing like Monarch Village can be a real lifesaver.
Studio worked during the pandemic to BTC Number Data build clean and comfortable homes. These units provide the privacy and security that people need to live well.
These prefabricated homes are different from the large, open-style homes that shelters traditionally offer.
Each unit is a small house that shares a covered patio.
The units are built around a community garden and a site that will soon become a butterfly garden.
There is also a large public space just north of the garden. The main building of Monarch Village houses a cafeteria where meals are served to the entire shelter population. Food is prepared and served with a farm-to-plate concept.
Each casita has enough space to sleep four people in two separate sleeping areas. There is also a full bathroom and kitchenette in each unit. Studio students built the furniture and cabinets for each house.
Studio , a non-profit corporation, offers students a hands-on design and construction experience. Graduate students from the University of Kansas Department of Architecture join the program to expand their studies and learn more about innovative building solutions that can create a better future. Students work on all aspects of design and construction during a nine-month academic year.
Built to meet USGBC LEED Platinum sustainable design standards, Monarch Village is Studio 's latest completed project.
Used shipping containers form the structure of the tiny houses, reused materials are used throughout the project, and passive strategies solve heating and ventilation problems.
