The specialist in Ethics and Morals and partner of , Xico Acis, spoke to us about ethics and conduct and what is necessary to have ethical competence in companies.
He also addresses the impact of external reporting channels within organizations: “Reporting channels have immense value in correcting this “flaw” in the ethical and moral process.”
Tell us what is the difference between conduct and ethics?
Human conduct, when standardized, is part of the culture Brother cell phone list of an organization and/or society. In this way, we can say that human conduct is part of what we establish as morality. Thus, the morals of a group of people are the “agreements” that that group has established as reasonable and acceptable for the group to evolve.
Codes of conduct are in this sphere. Ethics will deal with universal good/evil, that is, themes that involve the human being as a whole. That is why it is wrong to talk about a “Code of Ethics”.
If ethics are universal, how can there be a “code of ethics” for a given organization and/or category of people? What exists is a Code of Conduct and Ethical Principles, that is, a code that establishes standards for a group of people, based on universal principles, but respecting the culture of that group of people.
In your opinion, what is necessary to develop ethical competence in companies?
The area of ethics and morals is philosophy. Without studying philosophy in a structured and in-depth way, it will be difficult for a person to understand ethics and morals in their genesis. Ethical and moral competence develops with in-depth studies on the topics.
It has an academic aspect, but it must help the person understand an ethical dilemma and its possible solutions. Without developing ethical competence, a manager will probably feel uncomfortable after a difficult and/or complex decision by an ethics committee, for example. Making fair, impartial, equitable and therefore ethical and moral decisions should not, in principle, be based only on legal principles (Moral), but also on humanistic principles (Ethical).
What is the impact of the reporting channel on the company’s governance?
As we do not know ethics and morals deeply, we are afraid of hurting other people by speaking the truth. This is a belief that takes into account family values, religious values and civic values. None of this has anything to do with ethics and morals.
We don't want to be a “snitch” because this situation is pejorative for most Brazilians, even if you want to correct a mistake made by someone else. Reporting channels have immense value in correcting this “flaw” in the ethical and moral process. It is through these channels that we are able to reestablish the most correct path for a given organization.
How can complaints help the administrative board’s decision-making?
Complaints must be investigated in a fair, impartial, equitable and therefore ethical and moral manner. To this end, it is of fundamental importance that the ethics committees and/or councils that evaluate complaints know the ethical and moral principles in a structured way.
Analyzing a complaint only from the legal side does not create the ethical and moral culture in the organization, necessary for its evolution. Based on the complaints, an ethical agenda must be created involving all of the organization's stakeholders. Only then does preventive work make sense, otherwise complaints will never decrease.
We live in a moral and ethical crisis in Brazil, what can organizations do to change this situation?
I believe that it will be through companies that ethical and moral culture can be reestablished. Education is not showing interest in recovering these themes. In 1964, the military government removed the teaching of philosophy and sociology from the curriculum.
